BREXIT: The Complications

Dealing with BREXIT is no easy task. It is like a divorce. When you want to divorce your partner, you had to go to the court and agree on the settlement. More importantly, some would want to keep a good relationship with their partners if they have the same interest, for example, their child. Apart from that, each partner would lose some of their assets or even have to suffer money losses, because they have to finance their households alone, without a partner.

This is exactly what happened to BREXIT. Some would ask, “what are they doing now? If they want to leave the EU, just leave! What’s so hard about that?” The truth is, it is not that simple. To “divorce” or leave the EU, the UK has to set out a plan about their settlement. Moreover, they have the responsibility to plan how to keep getting the benefits from the EU through trade. And, the EU has to be negotiable as both of them have the same interest: A strong economy which is achieved through a trade agreement.

This is why, when some people argue that “the EU should act like a girlfriend who does not want to talk to her ex-boyfriend anymore! Completely abandon him.” But you see, they could not do that because the EU also feels the need to trade with the UK, as much as the UK wants to trade with the EU. The reason even escalates, as mentioned before, there are over hundreds of thousands of EU national living in the UK, and they want to secure that those people will not be having a severe economic and living condition after the UK leave the EU.

So, when we talk about the complication of BREXIT, what are those complications? Let’s divide the complexities into three major areas: Complications for the EU, UK, and the Non-EU countries.

Let’s start with the UK. By leaving the EU, it means that the UK has to leave the Common Market (EU), meaning, no more free trade anymore. To understand this, you have to understand the benefits of free trade: drives economic growth, enhanced efficiency, increased innovation, and the greater fairness that accompanies a rules-based system. Basically, a capitalist idea. All based on the merit-based system and competitiveness between firms or businesses. If the UK leaves the EU, some economists think that this would be bad for the economy, as they cannot satisfy their needs through cheap import, and cannot expand their economy through accessible exports. This is valid. However, it is also possible that they could open their trade with the rest of the world, not only with the Euro countries. Yes, expand their economies to become bigger and stronger.

Moreover, regarding the law, they would be able to adopt their own laws and do not have to adopt any European law that was not made by them. They would also be able to control the number of immigrants coming to the UK, protecting the British people’s jobs, and some would even say to prevent terrorism and cultural clash between the diverse population in the UK. Well, that sounds good, innit? But, don’t deny it. It is still risky.

However, remember, the UK is not only filled with the English who speaks in a posh English accent. There are the Welsh, Scots, and Northern Irish. Now, look at the map. You “obviously” know that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is different, right? Northern Ireland is part of the UK, while the Republic of Ireland is a whole different country. Moreover, the History between them was not so good. Repressions, anti-government groups were formed, basically chaotic. They even used to have a physical border to separate the Northern part and Southern part of Ireland. Yes, cruel. But, in 2005, realising that the Republic of Ireland is also part of the EU, and there is a free movement of factors of production, the physical barrier has been perceived as invisible, and indeed, it has improved the relations between the two people. However, if the UK leaves the EU, they will have to build it again. Creating more tensions.

So far, those are the “not-so-hard to understand” complications for the UK. In reality, there are so many things that

In general, the EU would experience the same problems as the UK. However, there is a more significant problem. Seeing the UK being able to leave the EU, it creates a domino effect on the other countries like France and Italy to leave too. Frexit and Itexit? Disastrous! Some countries who feel that the EU has not been beneficial for them could just leave, and I will tell you, they are really considering it right now. As a result, as you may have predicted, the collapse of the European Union.
